Notes
Notes for parents.
Written because a family asked, not because a keyword was available. Three so far, and each one answers its question in the first paragraph.
Texas child care ratios, explained
Texas sets a minimum caregiver-to-child ratio and a maximum group size for every age band — 1:4 for babies under a year, 1:11 for two-year-olds, 1:18 for four-year-olds. They are minimums, not targets, and a centre is allowed to sit exactly on them all day.
How to apply for CCS child care assistance in Bexar County
Child Care Services (CCS) is Texas’s child care subsidy, funded by the Texas Workforce Commission and run locally by your workforce board — in Bexar County, Workforce Solutions Alamo. If you are approved, the board pays your provider directly and you pay a share of the cost, capped at 7% of your household income.
Getting ready for kindergarten: what actually matters
Kindergarten readiness is mostly not academic. A child who can sit for fifteen minutes, follow a two-step instruction, manage a zip and a lunchbox, and separate from you without a scene will have an easier September than a child who can already read.
Come and see the room your child would be in.
No appointment needed. Come during the day when the rooms are full, ask what the ratio is right now, and take the answer with you.
